Exciting developments are underway in Chennai's transportation scene as the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) gears up for the second phase of its project. One of the most thrilling updates is the introduction of driverless trains, set to revolutionize the city's metro system.
Scheduled to debut in August, these driverless trains mark a
significant leap forward in Chennai's metro journey. While the official launch
of the first service is slated for 2025, trial runs will commence as early as
August. Initially, CMRL plans to have roving attendants onboard these trains to
oversee operations, ensuring a smooth transition into this new era of metro
travel. utilizing advanced technologies such as automatic AI, GPS, and signal
systems to navigate the tracks seamlessly. Safety remains a top priority, with
extensive testing planned for a year before these trains are opened to the
public, guaranteeing reliability and peace of mind for commuters.
However, amid the excitement, some residents express concerns about the introduction of driverless technology. Fear of the unknown and worries about potential malfunctions or accidents linger in the minds of some Chennaiites. CMRL reassures the public that rigorous testing and safety measures are in place to address these concerns and ensure the smooth operation of the driverless metro trains. Excitement is building as the design phase for these trains is already underway, with trials expected to begin within the next month. The first batch of 26 driverless trains, slated to run between Poontamalli and Porur, is set to be delivered by the middle of next year, heralding a new era of efficient and modern metro travel for Chennai residents.
Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro project promises significant
expansion, with three new lines covering a distance of 118.9 km. Following in
the footsteps of Alandur as the hub of the first phase, OMR will take center
stage as the hub for this exciting new chapter in Chennai's transportation
